EDGE PRINTING: A FINISH THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Far from being a small detail, printing on a book’s edges — also known as jaspage — adds a unique aesthetic dimension to your publications. It catches the eye, strengthens visual identity, and turns a book into a true design object.

Available for books with perfect binding, hardcover, softcover or board covers, this technique offers outstanding creative potential — for one-off editions as well as entire series.

DIRECT PRINTING ON THE BOOK BLOCK

The process consists of printing, in full colour (CMYK), visuals on the three visible faces of the closed book block: the head, the tail and the fore-edge. Printing is done using pigmented inks, ensuring good durability without damaging the paper.

This technique lets you extend the graphic universe of the cover or introduce a complementary atmosphere.

PREPARING PRINT-READY FILES

Required files

  • One separate PDF file per edge: head, fore-edge, tail.
  • Vertical orientation is mandatory for each visual.
  • Recommended format: PDF/X-4:2010.
  • Minimum resolution: 300 DPI.
  • Add 3 mm bleed on all sides.
  • Name files clearly: head_title.pdf, edge_title.pdf, tail_title.pdf.
  • Use the correct printable area according to the template (head, edge, tail).

For series and collections

For a series (e.g., a trilogy), each edge of each volume must have its own file. Artwork should be designed to visually continue from one book to the next. For a trilogy, you will need 9 jaspage files: 3 files per title for the head, fore-edge and tail.
